Weekend adventure (aka I love pie)

While David went to SLC to visit with his parent and some relatives, Ali planned a weekend adventure with friend Amy - now in her summer habitat about 2 hours west of ABQ.

The plan was to meet up and head south to Pietown, NM to meet the famous "Pie Lady's" and, of course, partake in our fair share of pie.

Our drive down took us through El Malpais (the badlands) National Monument, a tribute to the former volcanic activity in this area. Some of these lava flows are only 3000 years old.


We also drove past the largest natural arch formation in New Mexico

before reaching our final destination, the PIE-O-NEER.

Arriving just before closing time, it was slim pickin's but I did manage to scrounge a piece of the award winning NM Apple pie - apple pie with green chile and pinon (as if you had to ask).

The owner and baker also gifted us with pies slices "too small to sell" so we ended up with, between the two of us, about 4 slices of pie. Who am I to complain about a free slice of coconut cream?

With bellies full, we headed over to Amy's pie lady friend's cabin. Cabin is used loosely to describe heaven here. This is her backyard where I am showing off my latest knitted creation and Amy is working on hers.

We spent the night Tequila tasting, hot-tubbing and admiring the natural splendor around us. Needless to say, pie baking will happen tomorrow.
