NZ: Nelson Lakes and Murchison

From Blenheim we headed westward inland toward our next destination. We spent the morning at the wineries, and when Connor started getting sleepy we put him in the car seat and headed west. First stop was at Nelson Lakes. It was an absolutely gorgeous high mountain lake nestled between two craggy peaks. It was also a wilderness preserve where they have been slowly rebuilding the native flora and fauna. We took the opportunity to the boy a good run around at the playground (remember this trip is really about a tour of choice NZ playgrounds).

After an exciting leg of the trip between the lakes and our final destination (we won't recount the horror to you our sensitive reader, but we can say it involved the word "projectile"), we made it to the tiny town of Murchison. Not much there, but it is becoming more of a destination for those seeking whitewater excitement. We stayed at this very charming holiday park run by a cute NZ couple. The selling feature for us was they had a working farm and we tagged along when the animals got fed that evening. There were also a raft of ducks (note: raft is the official name for a group of ducks) that lived in the park which Connor thought was the most exciting thing ever. He went to sleep talking about them and they were the first thing he wanted to do when he woke up. Ahh, the joys of traveling with a toddler.
