Other signs of summer - tomatoes ahead!

It is starting to feel like summer is here. Ali's classes ended Thursday, our last rugby weekend was yesterday, and we put in the garden (finally). It seems like every year we strive to get the plants in the ground by the end of April, but we always seem to do it the Sunday after rugby is over. Since we are an early morning house now (thanks Conner), we were actually out in the backyard planting things by 9 am. We brought along the little guy, who sat peacefully in his bouncy chair enjoying the sights and sounds.

This year we planted tomatoes, spaghetti squash, habenero peppers, eggplant, zucchini and butternut squash. Last year we attempted planting heirloom tomatoes, but due to the extremely low yields (some only produced one tomato, albeit a very good tomato) we are going back to the prolific Better Boys, Early Girls, and Beefsteaks. Do I feel bad that I am going with very commercial varieties of tomatoes? No - I don't care if my tomato plants are spiked with genes from a yak, as long as they give me tons of tomatoes in August.
