Thanksgiving

This year we broke our long standing rule - don't travel for Thanksgiving - to go to Portland and spend the holiday with my family. Ian and Meg have been hosting Thanksgiving in the Pacific Northwest for many years now usually attended by my parents and Meg's father, but we have never gone. The deciding factor this year was that my uncle would be there as part of a month long cross country train trip. He and his wife hosted us too many weekends to count while we were in graduate school and were some of our best memories from those years. After a long battle with cancer my aunt passed away this past summer. This trip was his first vacation without his wife in 33 years. If he hadn't gone to Portland, we would have gone to see him in Pennsylvania.

It was officially the last flights with our free lap child. Connor as usual was a great traveler. Ian picked us up at the airport in the pouring rain - what we expected weather wise. Prior to this trip, we had only gone to Portland in the summer time during those two golden months where the weather is perfect. So while not a surprise, it was confirmation for us. But we had 1 nice day during our trip, but the rest of the time it was pretty miserable, which was perfect for staying indoors with family.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, coordinated and cooked completely by Ian and Meg. I must admit it was nice to have someone else cook for you. We ate well and had a really nice time! The next day we went down to Powell's book store by the city's wonderful light rail system mainly to give Connor a train ride. Loved it! Lots of family time, and as always, the vacation went much too quickly.
