My cousin from the Netherlands, Jeanette, was in last week for a visit to ABQ on her whirlwind tour of the southwest US. My parents drove her down from Salt Lake, stopping in Arches and Mesa Verde on the way. While she was here we made a visit to Acoma Pueblo, also known as Sky City. It is one of the original pueblos here in the southwest, and is considered as one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the US. It was founded around 1100 CE, and was the site of very bad interactions with the Spanish explores when the came through the area in 1598.
It built on top of a beautiful sandstone mesa, over 350 feet above the surrounding landscape. One of the highlights of the trip for Dad and I was the scramble off the top of the mesa following one of the original routes to the top of the mesa which has been in use for centuries (pictured below).
We had a nice time with Jeanette while she was here. We went up to Santa Fe the next day and spent some time at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, before going on to the square and meeting up with Ali for a traditional New Mexico meal and more sightseeing. Below is Ali and my parents in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis, which is on the original site of the first catholic church built here in 1610. This rich history and fascinating culture is one of the many reasons I love this state.
