Despite three seasons of skiing in Taos, we have never wandered over to see one of the greatest feats of engineering in the US. Leaving early from Taos, we took the 10 mile detour to visit the Taos Gorge Bridge. At over 650 above the Rio Grande, it is the 5th highest bridge in the US, and as a plus it is totally isolated and not very visited. It spans the 1200 foot wide gorge carved away by the river far below.
We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. While the views of the high desert and snow covered mountains and the vastness of the gorge itself are truly awe inspiring, the whole experience of walking out onto the bridge was also an completely vertigo and terror inducing journey. I have never done well with heights, but I did do it and was thankful for the change of underwear in the car :)
It was a beautiful sunny day (like always), and the remnants of the last snow storm still clung to the landscape. The chance to see the high desert covered in snow made it well worth the trip. Supposedly the bridge will factor very prominently in the upcoming Terminator movie (look for some spectacular shots that appear in the latest teaser trailer).
